Jaeda Yurkiw is a 21-year-old university student studying Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan.
From a young age, Jaeda has always had a passion for helping others and giving to those in need. She grew up having a high frequency hearing loss which has always been a challenge for her in every aspect of her life. However, it has never been an excuse for achieving her highest potential. Every obstacle she has faced, she has always persevered and managed to overcome them.
Since she has always been motivated to help others, she decided with all the knowledge she has from growing up with a hearing loss that she should use this to help other young children growing up and experiencing the same situations she did. When Jaeda was 16 years old she decided to start a non-profit organization called “The Hearing Helpers Foundation” to help young children and their families who are living with hearing loss.
Her goal was to raise money and provide scholarships for students graduating who are hard of hearing or who have persevered through difficult situations throughout their life. This is just the beginning, and someday she hopes to start a mentorship program and grow her foundation to help even more kids in the world, provide hearing aids/equipment for children who otherwise would go without due to financial hardship, and finally, make a donation in support of the most up to date progressive research projects available to cure hearing loss. In total, Jaeda has raised over $3500 and has funded seven $500 scholarships over the last four years to graduating high school students with hearing loss or have overcome academic challenges. She has established a GoFundMe campaign which is currently running for 2022-2023.
